The report examines the challenges of the Luxembourg EU Presidency and presents its leading personalities.
Three items in particular stand out for Luxembourg’s presidency: the mid-term review of the Lisbon strategy, the reform of the stability and growth pact and the overhaul of the Union’s budgetary perspectives during the period 2007-13.
Among other major events at the coming half-year’s agenda is also the visit in February of US president George W. Bush to EU headquarters in Brussels. In May the EU-Russian summit will take place while another important event may be the beginning of accession negotiations with Croatia on 17 March.
The incoming Luxembourg team in headed by Jean-Claude Juncker, a major player on the European stage. It will be Mr Juncker’s fourth EU Presidency, while Luxembourg’s permanent representative in Brussels, Martine Schommer will be the second woman to preside over Coreper in its fifty-year history.
