EC Law in Practise: A Case-Study Approach

The book covers the basic components of EC law (sources, principles and effectiveness) followed by the main elements of the Internal Market: the free movement of goods, persons, and services together with the freedom of establishment. A presentation of the fields of competition law and sex discrimination completes the volume. In each Chapter, students and practitioners are introduced to actual cases in order to exemplify how the European Court of Justice has used its powers to create and interpret EC law: an explanation of the actual impact of these decisions is reinforced with relevant extracts from the Court’s own judgements. In order to stimulate more interest, every chapter concludes with a list of useful further reading from English-language textbooks and journals.

Offering an intelligent approach to the core areas affected by EC law, readers will come to understand how EC law has developed, the way in which it impacts on national systems, and how it operates in everyday practice. As a self-contained study, the book is therefore ideally suited for use not only for specialist lecture and seminar courses but also for practice-based training exercises – linked to the acquisition and development of legal skills – including the ability to manage case files, to conduct legal research, to prepare cases for court proceedings (mooting), as well as to write legal opinions.
