Biographical Notes Peter Ludlow retired in 2001 after twenty years as founding director of the Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels (CEPS). He is now executive president of the Europen Strategy Forum. He has written many books and articles on 20th century European history and the politics and institutions of the EU, including detailed accounts of almost all the meetings of the European Council during the last decade. Wolfgang Münchau is associate editor and European economics columnist of the Financial Times and, together with his wife Susanne Mundschenk, is co-director of eurointelligence.com, a macro website offering news and comment about the euro area. He lives in Brussels. Iain Begg is a Professorial Research Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science. His main research work is on the political economy of European integration and EU economic governance. He has directed and participated in a series of research projects on different facets of EU policy and his current projects include studies on the governance of EU economic and social policy, the EU’s Lisbon Strategy, the social impact of globalisation and reform of the EU budget. Bassma Kodmani is the Executive Director of the Arab Reform Initiative, a consortium of Arab policy research institutes working in partnership with European and US institutes on issues of reform and democratic transitions in the Arab worl. She is also senior adviser on international cooperation to the French national research council (CNRS). She has written books and articles on conflicts in the Middle
East and regional security. Her latest publication, The dangers of political exclusion: Egypt’s Islamist problem, is published by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Nicole Gnesotto is currently Professor of International Relations, Head of the European Union Chair, at the Conservatoire National das Arts et Métiers, Paris. Prior to this she was the first director of the EU Institute for Security Studies, from January 2002 until May 2007. She is the author of many books and articles on contemporary European security, including EU security and defence policy – The first five years (1999-2004), Paris 2004, and The global puzzle: What worl for the EU in 2025?, Paris 2006 (With Giovanni Grevi). The latter title was published in French in October 2007, Le monde en 2025, edited by Robert Laffont. Manuel Preto has been Managing Director at Banco Santander Totta since 2005 with responsibilities in the financial area, including asset and liability management, corporate finances, financial participations and investor relations. Mr Preto joined Banco Santander de Negócios in 1996 as na equity analyst and, before assuming his current position, he was Head of Equity Research and Strategy for Portugal. Rui Constantino is the Chief Economist at Banco Santander Totta. His responsibilities include the macroeconomic analysis of the Portuguese economy within the Santander Group, and also the analysis of macroeconomic and financial developments, supporting the board and business areas of Santander Totta. Prior to joining the bank, he was an economist at the Research Department of the Portuguese Ministry of Finance. António Cortina has been Chief Analyst of Economic Research at Santander since 2001. His responsibilities include providing macroeconomic analysis, interest rate and exchange rate forecasts for Spain, the euro area, the USA and Latin American countries to the Group’s Financial Division and all other support and business areas.
