Ukraine, the EU, and Russia

Ukrainians re-emerged on Europe's political map in 1991 after more than 200 years of direct Russian rule. As there was no "liberation war" and "old regime" elites were not exiled or executed, the legacies of the past weigh-down particularly heavily. Political independence is not matched by economic, cultural and psychological independence.

The untold story of the Romanian ‘orphans’

Romania – for export only

Romania needed to reform its child rights policy, as one of the conditions for its future EU Membership. Large 'orphanages' were closed and replaced by modern child protection alternatives.

"This is a shocking and forensic case history of how the lobbying nexus can work in Brussels, threats and all, as children's lives are cynically disposed of between the "In" files and the "Out". Few players emerge well from this story and some are out-and-out black hat villains. A salutary antidote to the EU's 50th anniversary celebrations." – David Haworth, Irish Daily Mail.

Europe : A Civilian Power ?

‘Mario Telo has produced a visionary and wide-ranging analysis of how a European Union foreign policy, consistent with European social practices and values, could contribute to the revival of a transatlantic partnership, a new multilateralism, and the solution of pressing global problems. There could be no better introduction to progressive European thinking than Europe: A Civilian Power?’ – Robert O. The European Superpower

‘The notion of Europe as new superpower has been widely popularized but this scholarly but accessible book provides the first serious and systematic presentation of the case. John Mc Cormick argues that Europe is a new sort of superpower which combines civilian and military instruments is a unique and unprecedented way giving it many advantages over the US in a world in which, as Iraq has shown, hard power has clear limits and soft power backed by tangible means is a commodity of growing significance.’ – Jolyon Howorth, Yale University

Looking at these issues in comparative perspective, the contributors provide an insight into the causes that account for the changing role of officials and the extent to which those changes are a consequence of global or national factors.

Nouvelles approches en histoire de l’intégration européenne / New Approaches in European Integration History

Quelle(s) Europe(s)? / Which Europe(s)?

Over the course of the 20th century, Europeans devised, and at times even implemented, various visions of Europe. This book, with contributions from 25 young researchers from 10 different countries, illustrates this diversity. At a time when the European constitution and Europe's borders are raising many questions, this book will help readers understand the origins of its current contradictions. It is a necessary tool for all those who want to know the present state of historical research on European Integration.

The Class Cleavage

The Political Mobilization of the European Left, 1860-1980

In an in-depth comparative analysis, Stefano Bartolini studies the history of socialism and working-class politics in Western Europe. While examining the social contexts, organizational structures, and political developments of thirteen socialist experiences from the 1860s to the 1980s, he reconstructs the steps through which social conflict was translated and structured into an opposition, as well as how it developed its different organizational and ideological forms, and how it managed more or less successfully to mobilize its reference groups politically.

Governing New European Democracies

Governing New Democracies is a fully comparative study of decision-making processes in the cabinets of ten post-communist countries of East-Central and South-Eastern Europe. It is based on interviews collected from over 300 ministers to such questions as how far do cabinet members participate in cabinet meetings, how do they assess their prime ministers, how do they relate to their departments and to the civil servants under them. Thus, this book provides the first comprehensive panorama of life in cabinet governments from those who are the main actors in these institutions.

What’s Wrong With The European Union & How to Fix It

The European Union seems incapable of undertaking economic reforms and defining its place in the world. Public apathy towards the EU is also increasing, as citizens feel isolated from the institutions in Brussels and see no way to influence European level decisions.

Taking a diagnosis and cure approach to the EU's difficulties, Simon Hix tackles these problems with distinct clarity and open-mindedness. What the EU needs, Hix contends, is more open political competition. This would promote policy innovation, foster coalitions across the institutions, provide incentives for the media to cover developments in Brussels, and enable citizens to identify who governs in the EU and to take sides in policy debates. The EU is ready for this new challenge. The institutional reforms since the 1980s have transformed the EU into a more competitive polity, and political battles and coalitions are developing inside and between the European Parliament, the Council, and the Commission.

This emerging politics should be more central to the Brussels policy process, with clearer coalitions and identifiable winners and losers, at least in the short term. The risks are low because the EU has multiple checks-and-balances. Yet, the potential benefits are high, as more open politics could enable the EU to overcome policy gridlock, rebuild public support, and reduce the democratic deficit. This indispensable book will be of great interest to students of the European politics, scholars, policy makers and anyone concerned with the future of the European Union.
