European Dawn - After the Social Model

An intense debate is raging in Western Europe. Growth is slowing, employment is falling, the number of people living off the state is increasing, and welfare services are deteriorating. Why? Who is responsible? What should be done?

The blame game is in full swing. Greedy companies, neo-liberal thinkers, globalisation, hyper-capitalism and a general lack of solidarity and social justice are all held responsible. Evil forces are said to be destroying a supposedly successful and morally superior European Social Model.

Thus, politicians compete to support the European Social Model and they propose political measures to save it. Such policies include stopping the creation of a single European market in services, restrictions for foreign labour, tax harmonisation and limiting global trade.

It is time to speak clearly about the causes of the problems, the way out and the European dawn that awaits us after the implementation of thorough reform.

This book is intended to inspire reform, to provide a clear analysis, and to stimulate an open debate. Evidence is assembled here of how the Social Model causes the problems and what reforms could take us to a prosperous Europe.

MORE PRAISE FOR EUROPEAN DAWN:

Alain Madelin, former Finance Minister of France:

"Sweden was long considered the benchmark of social policy. But like all welfare states, the Swedish
version eventually proved to be a dead end. At a time when many European countries are paralysed by
government intervention, Mr. Munkhammar shows why market-based reforms can increase both economic efficiency and social benefits."

Bill Emmott, editor of The Economist:

"There is a vital need to persuade Europeans that market-based reform is in their own interests, not some fiendish American-imposed plot. This book will play an important role in meeting that need."

The author Johny Munkhammar is Director of the Swedish think tank Timbro.
